Long-Tailed Macaque Trader at Satria Animal Market Found Guilty: Court Affirms that Wildlife Trade Constitutes Animal Cruelty

The Denpasar District Court (PN) held a trial for the violation of Bali Regional Regulation (Perda Bali)  No. 5/2023 on October 8, 2025, regarding alleged animal cruelty for trading wild animals, specifically Long-Tailed Monkeys (MEP). SYT was caught in the act of selling MEP at Satria Market on September 7, 2025, after previously receiving education and warnings in mid-2024 and early 2025.

Sintesia and the Indonesian Wildlife Network Foundation (JSI) appeared as fact witnesses and expert witnesses in this trial to support the testimony that would be presented to the judge.

.

Through this trial, the Judge delivered a guilty verdict for acts of animal cruelty and imposed a fine of 500 thousand rupiah or alternatively a 7-day imprisonment.

Although there was hope for a harsher sanction, this ruling affirms that the trade of wild animals constitutes animal cruelty.

.

In court, the judge affirmed that the amount of the fine cannot be used to measure this criminal act, but the sanction was imposed as a reminder to the convicted person of the legal violation they committed. The keeping and selling of wildlife is indeed an issue that must be curtailed through collaborative action with a One Health and One Welfare approach.

The risks of disease and safety have always been a concern that remains unknown to the public. It is also possible that the keeping and selling of wildlife could lead to human-wildlife conflicts that can harm the environment. In light of these issues, Sintesia tirelessly continues to provide education to the people of Bali by collaborating with vertical and horizontal parties such as the Bali Public Order Agency (Satpol PP Bali), relevant authorities, and others.
